iPhone I/O

Stop, for a moment, and contemplate the sheer number and variety of inputs and outputs on an iPhone.

Outputs

  • Screen (320x480)
  • Two speakers (plus another two on the headphones)
  • Vibration thingy
  • Video out

Inputs

  • Touch screen (that can track 5 contact points)
  • Accelerometers (3 axes)
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Microphone (plus another one on the headphones)
  • Proximity sensor
  • Light sensor
  • Three buttons and a switch (plus another button on the headphones)

Networking

  • GSM
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • USB

Can anyone think of a device that tops that?

And yet despite all that, it can't be used as a modem for my laptop...

True, but, on the upside, it's clearly a case of the hardware is willing, but the software is weak. Hell, the thing could probably do IP over smoke signals if it felt like it.
